The Netherlands' Best Kept Secret

When planning a trip to the Netherlands, the iconic allure of Amsterdam often takes centre stage. Its picturesque canals, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit for travellers worldwide. However, there's a lesser-known gem that deserves just as much attention: Rotterdam.

Initially, like many visitors, when I found out that my chosen northern cities cruise was stopping at Rotterdam, my sights were set on the infamous day trips to Amsterdam. Yet, upon arriving in Rotterdam, I quickly realised that I had stumbled upon something truly special. Having visited Amsterdam more times than I can count on one hand, I decided to give Rotterdam a go and it’s safe to say that Rotterdam offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition, with a charm all its own.

One of the first things that caught my eye was the distinctive architecture. Instead of the traditional narrow houses synonymous with Dutch cities, Rotterdam boasts a skyline punctuated by sleek, contemporary structures. The Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus to the locals) in particular I found interesting. As a lover of architects like Hundertwasser and Gaudi, I was particularly fond of this hidden gem.

But it's not just about the architecture. Rotterdam's Market Hall is a feast for the senses, with its vibrant array of fresh produce, local delicacies, and international cuisine. With too many stalls to choose from we dined on Dim Sum, Italian Biscuits and Pizza! Though some of my colleagues were very disappointed to find out I  hadn’t tried the infamous Duck Burgers or Dragon Balls!

Of course, no visit to Rotterdam would be complete without exploring its extensive network of canals. While Amsterdam may be renowned for its waterways, Rotterdam's canals have a charm all their own. Whether by boat or on foot, winding along the water's edge offers a unique perspective of the city.

But perhaps the best-kept secret of Rotterdam is its accessibility as a base for exploring the surrounding area. At a fraction of the cost of Amsterdam, you can take excursions to nearby attractions such as the windmills of Kinderdijk, the historic city of Delft, or the picturesque countryside of Zeeland.

And for those who simply can't resist the allure of Amsterdam, fear not – it's just a stone's throw away. With regular trains connecting the two cities, you can easily experience the best of both worlds.

In conclusion, while Amsterdam may steal the spotlight, Rotterdam shines just as brightly in its own right. And if you’re looking for a lower cost city break with more to explore - Rotterdam could just be what you’re looking for. From its unique architecture and vibrant markets to its picturesque canals and convenient location, Rotterdam offers a truly unforgettable experience. So, the next time you find yourself planning a trip to the Netherlands, be sure to add Rotterdam to your itinerary – you won't regret it.
